The hallway is the first we see when we come home and the first our guest see when we are welcoming them, the hallway is the first impression. And we would like to make a good impression.

But most apartments and many houses as well, have very small hallways and they are often narrow too. It seems like they are most of all a passage to the other rooms. But we need storage their as well, who doesn’t have tons of shoes, jackets and bags?!
So today I have gathered some different tips and inspiration on how to make the best of a small hallway.

1. Storage
We need storage for a lot of things in the hallway; Jackets, shoes, bags, bicycle helmets and in the winter also gloves, hats and scarfs. And especially if you are a family these things takes a lot of space.
The functionality is better, if everything has a dedicated place; enough room for shoes and jackets, a place to drop the bag and you keys etc. Otherwise it will always seem messy and you will have trouble finding your things.
That can be a problem if you hallway is small and there isn’t room for a closet, but baskets, small cabinets and high shelfes can give you a lot of storage space.

2. Furnitues
When the room are small the furnitures needs to be small too. Big and dark furnitures are a no go, because the will take up all the space phycially and visually.
But for instance shoe cabins are really good, because they are very narrow and can contain a lot of things, not only shoes! The Ställ and Trones series from Ikea are very popular and also seen in these pictures. Wall mounted furnitures is also a good idea and you will keep some of that precious floor free.
If there are small notches in you hallway, use them for extra storage and find furnitures that fits.
And finally, keep in mind that a lot of small furnitues also can make a room seems crowed.

3. Light
A bright room seems bigger and is more comfortable to be in. A hallway is most often in the middle of the house with no or only small windows, therefore are mirrors and good light key factors.

4. Colors/Lines
If you have a long hallway you might want to consider to paint some of the it, by doing that it is possible to trick the eye and the way we percept the room.
– Paint the end wall to make the room seem shorter.
– Use horizontal stripes to make the room seem wider and lower. If you don’t want to paint, a long row of hangers or pictures can also do the trick.
– If there are high ceilings, paint the ceiling and top of the wall in one colour and the lower part of the wall in another colour. That way the ceiling will seem closer.

5. Balance
When a hallway is narrow it might seems like a good solution to keep all the things on one side and keep the other side free. That is correct regarding to keep the best flow and floor free, but it can cause that the hallway visually seem unbalanced.
Therefore it’s good to have things on both side of the hallway. It could be furnitures on one side and a mirror or a poster, things that doesn’t take a lot of space, on the opposite side.
